When kids go on summer break, many face a lack of access to affordable and structured summer programming. Being away from school can contribute to learning loss, isolation, and a lack of supervision. Many families in affordable housing communities often cannot afford traditional summer camps or full-day programs…
Building communities. One family at a time. Since 1984, CHOC has built multifamily affordable housing across California, providing safe, stable homes for working families. Our focus is less on the number of communities we’ve built and more on what’s driving our organization forward.
At Monarch Apartment Homes, a sense of belonging is felt everywhere. Our affordable housing community is more than just a place to live for our residents. For many, it’s a fresh start and a foundation where they can feel secure to build a brighter future. At Monarch, they find not only a safe, well-designed home, but also a welcoming community that supports them at every step.
Today, we’re highlighting the experiences of our residents and our property management staff (Sterling Asset Management), whose contributions help shape Monarch into a supportive, thriving community. Their stories offer a closer look at the impact a stable, welcoming home can have — and why it matters.

(Coachella, CA) - It’s the beginning of a new chapter for Placita Dolores Huerta’s working resident families, one that CHOC CEO Manuela Silva called "a miracle.” The complex’s 56 apartments are already fully occupied. Named in honor of the legendary labor activist, a driving force behind America’s largest farmworker movement, Placita Dolores Huerta broke ground in 2022, at a ceremony attended by the now 94-year-old Dolores Huerta; this community aims to create a sustainable, safe, and high-quality resident experience, inspired by Ms. Huerta’s lifelong work supporting farmworker and other, marginalized communities…
The Monarch Apartment Homes grand opening was everything we’d hoped it would be - for our organization, our residents, our partners and attendees. But, there was a beautiful, quiet moment right before our celebration began: the sight of a single Monarch butterfly floating through the agave, succulents, and desert plants now growing in the newly-constructed reflection garden.
Join us in celebrating the historic groundbreaking of the new Coachella affordable housing community, Placita Dolores Huerta, in honor of the globally-recognized social justice icon and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient.
